Description
In 2004, Karen Hughes was part of a group of 14 members of the Cordova Bay United Church who travelled to Dodoma, Tanzania in answer to a request from Wilson Mtebe, Secretary General of CCCT (Christian Council of Churches in Tanzania) to help build a nursery school for vulnerable children. Working alongside the local people of Kizota and playing games with the children was life changing. Upon return to Victoria, we decided to form a Society and Karen was the one who made it all happen. She provided all the legal work that was required in order to get the charitable status and FOR THE LOVE OF AFRICA SOCIETY was born!
Karen was the first President of For the Love of Africa Society and continued as President for several years. She worked tirelessly for fundraising projects, especially the FTLOA Walk/Run events at Beaver Lake and the popular annual Water Garden tours. Publicity was her forte and the Society became well-known in Greater Victoria! As her health began to fail Karen turned her hobby of making jewelry from rare stones gathered on her travels. Proceeds from this task were generously donated to FTLOA ongoing projects in Africa.
Many, many thanks to Karen for her tireless devotion to FTLOA. May she rest in peace.
